Chapter Sixteen
The motel that Everett suggested in Utah had one room left, a king suite, and it was pet friendly. It was only six o’clock in the evening, but Josie felt as if she’d been riding for a week in the buckboard of a covered wagon.
“I could sleep standing up in a broom closet,” she murmured.
Deke slung his duffel bag over his shoulder and rolled Josie’s suitcase down the long hall to the last door on the right. “Guess that means no massage tonight.”
“Depends on whether you are receiving or giving.” She leaned against the doorjamb while he slipped the card into the slot. The room was big enough, warm enough, and she’d gladly take the sofa bed, since he’d dished out the money for the first night. But before that she wanted a long hot shower and his shirt.
Deke’s hand shot out toward her. “Give me the leash. I’ll take him outside. We passed a grocery store about a block up the road. I’ll walk up there and get us some food for supper.”
He was bone tired and she could hear it in his voice. Driving all day in anything from snowflakes to drizzling to pouring down rain took its toll on a man, no matter how tough he was.
“Better idea. You take Rascal out and I’ll call in a couple of pizzas. They deliver them right to our door according to that card setting on the television. What kind do you and Rascal like?” she asked.
He reached for his wallet. “Meat lovers’.”
She waved him away. “Let me get this, so I don’t feel like a moocher.”
He nodded, which proved just how worn-out he was. Deke Sullivan was an old-fashioned cowboy who did not let the women folks pay for anything. He’d proven that at noon when she’d tried to pay for their lunch.
She picked up the phone and dialed the number from the advertisement, put in an order for two large meat lovers’ pizzas, an order of breadsticks with marina sauce, a bottle of Pepsi, and a six-pack of beer. The kid on the other end of the phone said to expect delivery within thirty minutes. That was long enough to take a long shower, so she rolled her suitcase into the bathroom and turned on the water.
Letting the water beat down on her stiff back muscles, she relived the whole day. They’d listened to at least twenty of the country music CDs in a case he kept on the back floorboard. She’d enjoyed every minute of it after a week with no music in her life, but at least one line in every song reminded her of Deke.
“At least we agree on country music. If he’d liked anything else, I might have started hitchhiking to the nearest bus station.”
She heard noises in the room, which meant he was back in the motel, so she quickly washed her hair and stepped out. It only took a few seconds to dry her body and get into his shirt. Rascal was curled up on the sofa.
